A cabin that comes with the woods
The A-frame sits in a clearing near the middle of forty-two acres, with trails running out from the gravel court in every direction. There is no shared trailhead and no passing traffic. For the length of your stay the woods are yours.
Inside, a two-storey window wall fills the great room with whatever the day is doing. There is one queen bed, a couch, and an air mattress. Comfortable for a couple, workable for four. The kitchen is a kitchenette, which is honest about what it is: coffee, a good breakfast, a bottle of wine from the cooler.
Hocking Hills is half an hour up the road when you want it. What you will not find nearby is much of anything else. Vinton County is the least populated county in Ohio, which is the entire point once the sun goes down.

The things worth knowing before you book, rather than after you arrive.
- The kitchen is a kitchenette: induction cooktop, microwave, mini fridge and a wine cooler. There is no oven.
- Sleeping is one queen bed, plus a couch and an air mattress for the other two guests.
- Access is by gravel drive, and the cabin has stairs up to both decks and a loft above.
- Cell signal is limited. Starlink wifi is fast, but turn on wifi calling before you arrive.

Vinton County is the least populated county in Ohio. That is the appeal, and it also means the good things are worth knowing about in advance.

- Swimming beach, rental kayaks, and the trail to Big Rock. The lodge does a decent dinner.
- Zaleski State Forest10 minutes
- Nearly 27,000 acres. The backpack trail is the best overnight loop in southern Ohio.
- Moonville Tunnel25 minutes
- An abandoned railway tunnel deep in the woods, and the rail trail running out from it.
- Hocking Hills30 minutes
- Old Man’s Cave and Ash Cave are an easy morning out. Close enough to visit, far enough that the crowds stay behind when you come back.
